恋焦がれて死んだ美貌の娘の幽霊が、カラン､コロンと下駄の音を響かせ、夜ごと愛しい男を訪ねる、という幻想的なシーンが有名な傑作怪談「牡丹燈籠(ぼたんどうろう)」。
実はこの「お露・新三郎」の怪談話は、初代三遊亭圓朝(さんゆうていえんちょう)による長編落語のほんの一部にすぎません。原作は、お露の父・平左衛門とその忠臣・孝助、お家乗っ取りを企(たくら)む希代の悪女・お国と、その間男(まおとこ)・源次郎、強欲な町人夫婦・伴蔵とお峰・・・。男女の色と欲が生々しく交錯するドロドロの人間ドラマであり、20年にもわたる壮大な敵討ち、因果応報の物語になっています。
最後には「幽霊より人間が怖い」と感じさせる傑作長編愛憎劇を、新たな視点と演出で今回初めて完全映像化！ワイヤーアクションや特殊メイク、チャンバラもふんだんに投入。和製ホラーの決定版を、現代日本を代表する俳優陣でお届けします。
