◎简 介
1962年，台湾正值白色恐怖时期，当时国民党政府以防止共产主义渗透等理由实行戒严令，路上举目皆是反共标语，政府亦鼓励人民告密检举匪谍，并严禁私自结党。同时为了管制言论思想，政府将许多书籍列为禁书，禁书类别甚广且认定标准不一，例如诺贝尔文学奖得主诗人泰戈尔的《飞鸟集》[注 1]即是其一。但在这样的高压环境下，仍有许多人在台湾各个角落暗中举办读书会，追寻自由。
台风夜，翠华中学三年级的方芮欣在昏暗的教室醒来，在寻找张明晖老师的途中遇到了二年级的学弟魏仲廷，两人走到校门口却发现溪水暴涨，于是回到校园中继续找寻张老师。但学校渺无人迹，校舍中贴满了台湾省政府查封的封条与台湾丧葬的示丧纸“忌中”。他们发现事件并不单纯，并逐渐想起过去所发生的悲剧。
翠华中学美术老师兼任辅导教师张明晖在校内储藏室创办了读书会阅读禁书、成员包括音乐老师殷翠涵、学生魏仲廷等人。另一方面方芮欣因为家庭失和使学业成绩受到影响，殷翠涵便引介她给张明晖，希望张明晖能辅导方芮欣走出低潮，孰料在密切的心理辅导之下，方芮欣与张明晖意外产生了师生恋，张明晖并亲手做了一条白鹿项链赠与方芮欣。
一日早晨，方芮欣的母亲李妙子怀疑丈夫方道勤有外遇，却遭到方道勤家暴，情绪失控的李妙子不断念佛，并向菩萨许下希望方道勤消失的愿望。方芮欣到校后，先前因压力过大而在《校史》中的历任校长肖像上涂鸦一事，被负责管理秩序兼任校园思想控制的军训教官白国锋知道，白教官希望方芮欣不要给她即将升官的父亲添麻烦，并表明有任何问题可以找教官商量。朝会升旗典礼时，教师黄又新因涉及“颠覆国家”罪嫌，被宪兵当众拘捕，引起骚动，也使白教官对校内所有老师展开调查。当晚，方芮欣与张明晖两人在校外幽会，方芮欣在纸上画出琴键，教他弹奏《雨夜花》。方芮欣返家后，发现父亲遭宪兵队逮捕，父亲要方芮欣让母亲通知白教官，在他离开后，方芮欣才知道父亲之所以被捕，正是因为母亲的举报。
几日后，殷翠涵注意到张明晖和方芮欣过从甚密，提醒他应该谨言慎行，以免让方芮欣陷入危险，不久，张明晖就跟方芮欣提出分手，方芮欣因偷听到殷翠涵与张明晖的对话，误以为是殷翠涵对张明晖也有爱意，想要拆散自己跟张明晖。方芮欣一来希望希望白教官救回父亲，二更希望“情敌”殷翠涵因阅读禁书而遭校方解聘，便利用对自己有好感的魏仲廷，取得读书会的证据并向白国锋举报。白国锋并未对方芮欣的要求有具体承诺，只说：“国家会感谢你的。”
警备总部派员到校，包括张明晖在内的所有读书会成员皆被拘捕，有的被就地正法，有的死于刑求，连借储藏室钥匙给读书会的工友也被虐杀。张明晖在临刑前嘱咐魏仲廷要活下去，因为自由终会来临。之后张明晖被依叛乱罪枪决，魏仲廷听从建议，招供以保住性命；方芮欣则因愧疚难耐，在礼堂舞台上自缢身亡，以死向枉死孤魂谢罪。
多年后，魏仲廷因解严而赦免出狱，他克服了恐惧，到张明晖的坟上祭扫后“返校”，到即将因都更改建为大厦的翠华中学，将张明晖的绝笔信与定情之物白鹿项链，交给了方芮欣的灵魂。
