本剧是时装警匪奇情剧集又一大突破，承接［新扎师兄］剧情发展的［新扎师兄续集］，卡士增添精英，桥段倍见姿采，人情味更加浓厚激情。
倪峰入狱后，不想拖累张嘉汶（刘嘉玲），要求与她离婚。汶內心痛苦，但为了令峰安心，最终协议分开。张伟杰（梁朝伟）自谢颖之离开后，仍念念不忘，无心结交其它异性。刚巧叔父张竟成（周润发）及奶奶由大陆到港，准备投靠张家，张父却不加理会，伟杰多次帮助他，和竟成为莫逆之交。
竟成乃內地医生，想报考英联邦医生的考试，以便在港执业，但因使用伪销事件留下案底，丧失投考权，灰心之余，铤而走险，偷运水货。后结识女友巧楠，却被伟杰的死对头督察韩彬橫刀夺爱。
巧楠的妹妹巧宣（曾华倩）考入警校，结识伟杰，二人发生了恋情，并结为夫妇。可惜婚后磨擦越来越深，伟杰更重蹈父亲的覆辙，与巧宜的好友吴欣，发生一段婚外情。后来欣被杀害，巧宜也被牵扯进去，令巧宜困扰不已，伟杰不断安慰她。
最后真凶被擒，经此一事，伟杰，巧宜更觉真情可贵。而伟杰的事业亦渐有发展，回顾以往日子，唏嘘之余，亦感到欣慰。
