◎简 介
一八七一年五月，沙俄发动了对伊犁的大规模军事入侵，占了伊犁九城。时为陕甘总督的左宗棠认为，要收复新疆，务必先弹劾长年拥兵在高台，对百姓横征，暴敛的乌鲁木齐提督成禄。慈禧太后既视左宗棠为社稷栋梁，又怕他拥重兵远镇西北，因此缓斩成禄，以左宗棠锋芒，同时任命满族大员景廉为督办新疆事务的钦差太臣，仅让左宗棠为办粮饷，并暗中查左宗棠的帐目。年过六旬的左宗棠忠而见疑，一度想告老去当湘上农人。然而，形势日益严峻。日本犯台，东南告急。李鸿章提出停撤西征兵饷，加强东南海防，由此朝廷展开了一场塞防、海防的激烈争论。左宗棠置个人进退荣辱於度外，主张塞防海防应当并重，痛斥放弃新疆塞防的谬论，采取断然措施，举外债以充西征军饷。可是连老朋友，两江总督沈葆祯都认为西征是孤注一掷。左宗棠顽强地筹集粮饷，制作枪炮，安抚百姓，训练军队，做好西征的准备。慈禧太后权衡国事利弊，终於决心派左...
